When you hire a skip, the price normally covers delivery, the hire period, pick-up and the cost of disposing of the waste. The disposal part, often called the tip fee, is a big share of the total.
Why waste type matters
Tip fees depend on what's in the bin. Clean green waste and clean fill can often be recycled, so they usually cost less to dispose of. Mixed general waste generally goes to landfill and costs more. Heavy materials cost more because fees often depend on weight.
The landfill levy
Waste sent to landfill in the Perth metropolitan area attracts the state government waste levy, set at $90 a tonne for 2026–27 and scheduled to rise each year. It's built into what tips charge, and so into skip prices.
Ways to keep the cost down
- Keep green waste, soil and general waste separate if your provider offers cheaper sorted bins.
- Choose the right size. Hiring a second bin because the first overflowed costs more than going one size up.
- Don't fill above the rim, and keep banned items out to avoid extra charges.
- Ask how long the hire period is and what extra days cost.
